25 ME[me]

The Facebook “25 Things” Meme has been completed by a trillion point five people.  Also weird is that I’ve read a TIME.com post, NYTimes.com post, and a Slate.com article about it.  Two articles mocked the meme: TIME.com’s blogger noted the immense time waste, the NYTimes.com was about shaping the perceptions others’ have of the 25 Things completer.  Slate.com referred to the way the meme spread like a disease.

Anyways, I’m a sucker and read shit I shouldn’t read (like random people’s blogs) like they’re crack.  I also like how it incites me to be self-reflective.  I love reflecting about myself.  Everybody needs to do it.  Champion self-awareness!  Anyways,  I’m not going to complete the entire 25, but here are some rather insightful things about myself that I have recently realized:

  • I have a very Western conception of time.  I love schedules and scheduling.  I live by plans.  I’m most productive when I’ve created a to-do list and schedule.  I am early to every class I attend.  I am early to appointments.  I hate being late.  I hate when others are late on me.  I take it as disrespct of my time (and I hate being late when meeting others because I think it shows disrespect to them).  Weird that I’m Filipino and have a very non-Filipino notion of time.
  • Joy asked what our most feminine trait is.  I said that mine is the tendency to label people as close/very close friends very easily.  I apply this label too much; it makes me sad when I realize I’m wrong, which is rather frequently.
  • The creation of my Google Reader marked my decline.  I waste so much time on that thing.  I’m getting better and slowly coming to terms with the inability to read it all (he gives me a few hundred new items daily).  But super death.  I also looove my Google Reader <3.  (He also gave me the three articles I noted above!)

Food & Sex

Is Food the New Sex?

Heyy, Hoover Institute, I pass that place all the time!

One more critical link between the appetites for sex and food is this: Both, if pursued without regard to consequence, can prove ruinous not only to oneself, but also to other people, and even to society itself.

What happens when, for the first time in history — at least in theory, and at least in the advanced nations — adult human beings are more or less free to have all the sex and food they want?

Up until just about now, for example, the prime brakes on sex outside of marriage have been several: fear of pregnancy, fear of social stigma and punishment, and fear of disease. The Pill and its cousins have substantially undermined the first two strictures, at least in theory, while modern medicine has largely erased the third.

Many people who wouldn’t be caught dead with an extra ten pounds — or eating a hamburger, or wearing real leather — tend to be laissez-faire in matters of sex. In fact, just observing the world as it is, one is tempted to say that the more vehement people are about the morality of their food choices, themore hands-off they believe the rest of the world should be about sex. What were the circumstances the last time you heard or used the word “guilt” — in conjunction with sin as traditionally conceived? Or with having eaten something verboten and not having gone to the gym?

This brings us to another similarity between junk sex and junk food: People are furtive about both, and many feel guilty about their pursuit and indulgence of each. And those who consume large amounts of both are also typically self-deceptive, too: i.e., they underestimate just how much they do it and deny its ill effects on the rest of their lives. In sum, to compare junk food to junk sex is to realize that they have become virtually interchangeable vices — even if many people who do not put “sex” in the category of vice will readily do so with food.

The all-you-can-eat buffet is now stigmatized; the sexual smorgasbord is not.
