The Higher Lifetime Costs of Being a Gay Couple

In our worst case, the couple’s lifetime cost of being gay was $467,562. But the number fell to $41,196 in the best case for a couple with significantly better health insurance, plus lower taxes and other costs.

Inequality much?

London’s new drinking fountains a new challenge to bottled water industry

This is an amazing model!  A wonderful example of a private company’s endeavors that can meaningfully combat a large social problem.

Excess weight prior to conception tied to congenital heart defects

Hey, I learned about this in one of my classes!  And the following quotation would have previously been nonsense, but I actually know what it means (cool!):

Specifically, above-normal BMI (25 kg/m2 or higher) was associated with conotruncal defects, tetralogy of Fallot, total anomalous pulmonary venous return, hypoplastic left heart syndrome, right ventricular outflow tract defects (particularly pulmonary valve stenosis), Ebstein’s anomaly, septal defects, and secundum atrial septal defect.

Can Walmart Sell Nutrition Better Than The U.S.?

Interesting argument about the distribution network of Walmart.  Good point, but what incentive does Walmart have to sell high quality produce at the same value as its other products (aside from a sense of egalitarianism that hopes to allow urbanites better access to high-nutritional value foods).

Cracks in the Future

More of Berkeley’s undergraduates go on to get Ph.D.’s than those at any other university in the country.

That is mighty impressive.

So it’s dismaying to realize that the grandeur of Berkeley (and the remarkable success of the University of California system, of which Berkeley is the flagship) is being jeopardized by shortsighted politicians and California’s colossally dysfunctional budget processes.

I love UC Berkeley, and many of the other UC campuses.  It’s just so sad.

Swiss Model for Health Care Is Gaining Admirers

“I’ve seen things in the U.S. that I’ve never seen here; it was a state of disaster,” he said. “Chronic disease management is better here. If you don’t treat hypertension, you treat strokes. Not treating patients is expensive.”
