A problem for sure given that nonprofits should not be compensating its leaders at exorbitant levels.

Important to note that most nonprofits are on struggle:

Large charities like the Boys & Girls Clubs and the American Cancer Society, which take in more than $100 million annually and tend to pay their leaders six-figure incomes, account for just two-tenths of 1 percent of the nation’s more than one million nonprofit groups, according to Charity Navigator.

Also something to consider: Wall Street pulled smart individuals from sciences fields because of the amount of monies that banks could offer.  I know many people who want to do good in the world, but know that they won’t be able to survive financially.  How can we incentivize these individuals monitarily, so that their passions and ideas can actualize into positive social outcomes?

I mean to say that the two are finally back from their second summer break.  You men need to stop vacationing.  I’m glad you gain time to grow beards and tan, but the weeks without you are terrrrrrible.  Watching this week’s episodes really does make me feel like I never want you both to ever leave.

Siigh.. zero sum game.  People need to stop viewing these things as terrible competition.  I mean yes, less funds for some does make it difficult to do work (take it from someone fighting a neglected disease).  But we’re better off that there are so many groups fighting for so many causes.  And we all have the same goal: improved health outcomes.  The focus needs to be on that.

Har.. but it’s just so much easier to use race as a proxy for diversity because, well, you can see skin color :P.

This provides statistical confirmation for what alumni of highly selective universities already know. The most underrepresented groups on elite campuses often aren’t racial minorities; they’re working-class whites (and white Christians in particular) from conservative states and regions. Inevitably, the same underrepresentation persists in the elite professional ranks these campuses feed into: in law and philanthropy, finance and academia, the media and the arts.

I love discussions about diet and environment.  Neither health benefits nor “moral reasons” were considered in this piece.  It was mainly a “bad environmental effects” v. “good environmental effects” of increased/decreased meat consumption.

Some media organizations have looked at these data and have erroneously concluded that race is not a factor in HIV transmission. This is a false analysis and an absurd and dangerous conclusion. The point is not whether race or poverty matters; the point is that race and poverty matter.

I appreciate this piece.  It’s not that being black, having sex with men, or being a young woman invariably leads to HIV/AIDS infection.  What matters is why communities are disproportionately affected.  Stigma, socioeconomics, health care/education accessibility.

So does poverty matter? Of course. But to pretend that race is not a huge factor affecting who is poor in America is naive at best and maliciously racist at worst.

A very good reminder to all!  And a very nice, simple explanation of why we were so quick to believe the study: it gave hope.  Glad I was able to study this topic just after taking my Child Health course.  Dr. Adams must be happy.
